Image optimisation is usually sold as a subscription to somebody else’s servers: you upload, they compress, you pay per image. MevvMedia does the whole thing on the machine your site already runs on. It builds WebP and AVIF derivatives with Imagick or GD, serves them through <picture> so every browser gets a format it understands, and never deletes your originals.

Delivered through <picture>, not a rewrite rule
A rewrite rule is faster to serve but tied to one web server, and a CDN without Vary: Accept caches the wrong format for everyone. <picture> behaves the same on Apache, nginx and LiteSpeed, and behind any CDN.
The largest image is never lazy-loaded
The first image gets fetchpriority="high" and is excluded from lazy loading. Lazy-loading the image above the fold delays its discovery and makes Core Web Vitals worse — a mistake most plugins make.
Responsive selection survives
When a <source> matches, the browser ignores the <img> srcset. MevvMedia carries the whole candidate list across, and prints no source at all if one candidate has no derivative — a missing candidate means the wrong size on a phone.
Your originals are never deleted
Derivatives are written beside the original as photo.jpg.webp. Deactivate the plugin and every image on the site still works.
A queue, not a timeout
Bulk conversion processes a handful of images per run with an explicit Imagick memory limit. Converting a whole library in one request is how shared hosts hand out CPU penalties.
It tests what the server can actually write
Imagick lists AVIF among its formats on servers that cannot encode it. MevvMedia encodes a 2×2 image to find out, and falls back to GD per format — without that check a real server produced no AVIF at all while reporting support.
